FORWARD
We gratefully express our appreciation to Mrs. Rex George Mattice of Cincinnati, for
the records containing the historical and genealogical. data of this book.
It was George Willard Mattice who first had the inspiration to record the names and
accomplishments of the Mattices who came from the Rhineland to this great land of
America. Later, Rex George Mattice carried on the work of his father, sacrificing his
health, wealth and leisuretime to compile a record which will live on with the
descendants of a people who faced tyranny, starvation and death to establish themselves
in this land of Freedom.
Mrs. Sarah G. Jacobs in speaking of our American ancestry said, "God sifted the Nations
of the earth when be brought the early settlers to the shores of this American continent"
The book contains histories of The palatine European families, intermingled with
contributions from professional' historians and historical events and family genealogies
of the first six settlements in Schoharie Co. New York. Information has also been drawn
from families, records of Rangers, Minutemen, the Revolutionary War Prison reports,
Casuality lists and the early American battlegrounds. It may be noted that grammatical,
errors are common in translations from the German language and "quotes" by those
stalwart people, whose English had not been perfected.
It was the desire of the two Mattice compilers that their book should be an historical
reference work of Palatine history, as well as the first Mattice family history and
genealogy.
After obtaining these records, we the under-signed have made an honest effort to
assemble and have this valuable information published. To all who have contributed, we
are most grateful and trust you will be liberal and join with us in our enthusiasm for the
book, - Mattice Family history of Palatine Emigration, 1709 - 1961.
