THE MATTICE and/or MATTIAC FAMILY
Research has disclosed that Hendrick Mattice the progenitor of the Mattice family, who
settled in Schoharie Valley at Weiserdoef (now Middleburgh, N. Y.) in 1712 came from
Duerheim commune Altzheim of the Rhinish Palatinate. Traveled down the Rhine to
Holland with his wife Catharine and six, children. They embarked at Rotterdam in, the
3rd party of palatines (approx. ) June 5th 1709. Within ten days they had arrived in
London, England, where they were at St. Catherine's, in the 3rd party as of June 15th
1709. In the sailing list his name is given as Henrig Matheys and upon arriving in London
ten days later his name is given as Henry Mathes age 42, sons 8-6-1, daughters 13-10-6,
they were Reformed. They embarked January 10th 1710 to sail for America, but
remained aboard ship off the coast of England until April 10th 17l0, when they sailed.
The first ship reached New York June 13th 1710 and the last to arrive (10 ships) was
August 2nd 1710. Governor Hunter's Ration list of 1710 lists Henrich Mathias as having
4 over 16 yrs. and 3 under 16 yrs. In the same list for 1712 his name is given as Matheus;
it will be noted that one child was lost since their arrival in England. Of those listed as
being at Livington Manor (East Camp) 1710/11 is one Henrich Mattheis. Those who
were at Queensbury as Volunteers for the invasion of Canada in 1711 lists Henr.
Mathous. Sabina Matteus (Hendrick's oldest daughter) was married in Schoharie June 4th
1716 at which time-Hendrick had died. A census taken of Weiserdorf about 1715 gives
Henrich Matthaus, his wife Catharine and 4 children.
