THE MATTICE and / or MATTIAC FAMILY
* The people in between Germany and France have been able to hold their ground
remarkably well considering that from the year 843 at the break-up of the Charlemagne
empire the country has been a favorite battle ground. After World I, an extensive
examination of land-titles was carried out and it was found that many families held their
land titles from the time of Charlemagne.

During the Roman period the whole of the district of Nassau (now l,830 sq. mi. ) was
occupied by the Mattiaci and later by the Alamanni. The latter were subdued by the
Franks under Clovis at the end of the 5th century and at the partition of Verdum in 843
the country became part of the East Frankish or German Kingdom.
